small improvements of tasks UI/UX

OpenRodaviva29 (GitHub) · · edited

Creating and editing tasks takes more clicks than it needs to. Below are a few improvements to the creation flow, inline editing, subtasks and some UI details. Each item is independent and can be picked up separately.

Task creation

  • Choose the status in the creation modal. The status is currently fixed by the "+" button you click, since each status has its own. If you change your mind now after filling in the details, you have to either discard the task or create it and change the status afterwards. The status should be an editable field in the modal, pre-filled with the one you clicked.
  • Close single-choice dropdowns after a selection. Dropdowns such as status or priority stay open after picking a value, which adds an extra click. Single-choice dropdowns should close on selection, while multi-select ones (labels, assignees) can stay open. If the current behavior is intentional, a setting to change it would be enough.
  • Create tasks from the Calendar view. Clicking a day in the calendar opens the creation modal with the dates pre-filled based on where you clicked.
  • Default assignee per project. A project setting that automatically assigns new tasks to a chosen member. The automations proposed in #1781 would cover this and much more (great idea!), but a simple project setting would still be useful on its own.

Editing

  • Inline editing of task properties. Change status, assignee or labels by clicking directly on them in the list or board, without opening the task. Right-click already works, but clicking the property itself we want to change would be faster.

Subtasks

  • Set a parent on an existing task. The hierarchy can currently only be built top-down, by opening the parent and creating a new subtask. It should also work bottom-up: from any task, choose its parent.
  • Add an existing task as a subtask. From the parent, link an existing task instead of only being able to create a new one.

UI polish

  • "Create more" option. It currently looks like plain text. A proper checkbox or toggle would make it clear that it is an option.

  • "New resource" modal. The layout could be polished to match the rest of the app.

Additional context

These changes target the most frequent flows (creating and triaging tasks) and mostly remove clicks rather than add new concepts, so they should fit Kaneo's focus on simplicity.

Related: #1781 (automations, which could also cover the default assignee).
